Merry Christmas..! Mat Hazley (trail-name Squeaky) is attempting to hike the Pacific Crest Trail, Continental Divide Trail, and Appalachian Trail in a single calendar year. I spoke with him last Sunday at Miss Janet’s hiker hostel in Erwin, 338 miles from Springer Mountain. He estimated thirteen days to get there, as he routinely hikes 40 to 45 miles a day. A big thanks to Miss Janet for lining up this conversation..!

Thank you, very very much for this interview! This is the best telling of Squeaky’s story I have seen, and he’s telling it in his own voice!
Squeaky is powerfully inspiring.

Just to clarify on your introduction. Squeaky is the second person to do the triple crown in a calendar year. Flying Brian did it 2 or 3 years ago.
This is a great site. Very nicely done.

Congratulations to Mat Hazley and thank you for awesome TRAILCAST - but, before you do an interview or go out telling everybody your the first person to do something please double-check first… It was only in 2001 when Brian Robinson (Flying Brian) hiked a calendar triple crown unsupported in ten month. - My recommendation is you do an interview with him! And maybe correct this PodCast with a short remark at the beginning, as soon as possible. I do not want to criticize, but it is just, Flying Brian has inspired so many people and he deserves honor for what he’s done. As well as Mat Hazley who did it the first time without flip-flopping which is, (I am sure Brian would agree) harder then flip-flopping! So one more time, Thanks to all of you for your inspiration!

Great job Matt… I heard of your travels from David Horton and was most interested…
I am doing the AT in sections and averaging 25-30 which is just a walk in the park compared to your effort but I am enjoying it to the max…
I hear that you have in mind doing the AT again and attempting the speed record. If so and if you need support on the southern end, I would be happy to serve…

You could sure tell Sqeaky was tired at this point in his journeys. Congratulations on an amazing hike - all with only two years backpacking experience. Talk about throwing yourself head-first at something. Good luck with the AT yo-yo if you decide to do it.

Great article. I am just sad I dont know how to reply properly, though, since I want to show my appreciation like many other.
