Trailcast 18 - Brian Robinson - First Triple Crown in a year

podcast icon trailcast-18-Feb-06-2006.mp3 (20 MB)

Brian RobinsonOn October 27, 2001 Brian Robinson completed his hike of the Triple Crown in a single calendar year– the first to do so.. While thru-hiking the PCT, Brian began formulating ideas for a completely different hike, a PCT yo-yo instead of a Triple crown in a single season. It wasn’t until a good deal after his PCT hike that he made the decision to attempt a calendar year Triple Crown. In our conversation Brian talks about the logistics involved in hiking these three long trails in a single season and his experiences during his ground-breaking walk of 7,371 miles in 300 days. You may also be surprised to know that Brian’s dad is the inventor of the famous DIY hiker alcohol stove– the Cat Stove.

Great interview, and nice to see the ‘calendar year triple-crown’ controversy put to rest so civilly and respectfully.

I’ll volunteer for a bike tour interview if you pursue that - my tour journal is here.

A new one already! Yay! I look forward to these all of the time, and they just keep getting better. Thanks for all of your hard work making these podcasts. You’re super. -Mammoth

I am loving your interviews. You ask the questions that pop in my head as I listen. Thank you for the info, and the dedication you have for giving me something that is both intelligent and interesting to listen to.

This is probably my favorite way to pass time at work. I can close my eyes and imagine I’m not in the office, and listen to people who are as nerdy as me about hiking. Hurray!

You comment, at the end of this show, that you’re thinking about talking about bicycle touring in future shows. I too have loved my longer cycling adventures, such as the time I circumnavigated Lake Superior. But you state at the beginning of the show that, “Trailcast is a podcast about hiking.” I assert that this clarity of purpose should remain your mission. If you want to podcast about biking, that should be a separate entity from a podcast about hiking.

It was fun hearing Brian talk again. But I didn’t hear you ask him about his four-day, almost un-supported run of the 210-mile John Muir Trail. That’s quite a story as well.

Great article. I am just sad I dont know how to reply properly, though, since I want to show my appreciation like many other.

This is becoming one of my favorite trail websites, simply because of your excellent questions and the people you interview. As a thru-hiker from the old days ( AT 1980), it’s great to listen to the hikers of today who are taking on new challenges and have completed hikes that nobody thought possible not that long ago. It’s too bad you couldn’t have interviewed ole Earl Shaffer or Ed Garvey for example, but I look forward to your other interviews of thru-hikers and other interesting people further down the trail… This was once again a great listen. Happy Trails to All…
