Scott "Squatch" Herriott produced two documentaries about thru-hikers on the Pacific Crest Trail entitled, "Walk" and "Still Walking." In these films, Squatch follows the progress of these hikers– many of whom are notable repeat offenders such as Yogi and Billy Goat. His chronicle of these hikes is intimate and sincere and often hilarious as they share their good, bad and odd moments. Maintaining a professional and light-hearted approach, Squatch even manages to find time to discuss another passionate interest– Big Foot..!

Well, I’m excited to check out this film. Indie producers all the way! He was even commenting on our PCT-L conversations about solo-hiking from last week. This podcast just makes the world seem really small and accesible. I love it!

What a comment: “they’re the walkers, we’re the talkers” man what a comment (minute 25) awsaom joke… Well I don’t think so, everyboady who’s a talker will be a walker - at least you are going to be! THE DANGEROUS THING ABOUT DREAMING IS - ONE DAY IT WILL COME TRUE!!! mark my words… (and I borowed them!)
Great Interview!!!

Great interview! Herriott’s docs are not to be missed. Buy ‘em on eBay and he’ll even autograph them for you!

Great podcast, bought the dvd’s, which are great. Wish I knew about the autographing of them :(
I’m a gadget freak, and would love to know what the gadgets where the thru hikers were using on the trail in the Walk dvd. Some were generating dial tones, etc etc.

Darren,
Those were Pocketmail devices that some hikers use to send, via telephone, email messages they’ve typed out on-trail. Great way to get journal entries to the civilized world.

Squatch,
thanks for that. Not heard of that device over here in the UK.
I will have to look more into them on the web.
And still watching and enjoying your two films on dvd.

Great article. I am just sad I dont know how to reply properly, though, since I want to show my appreciation like many other.

Noticed in still walking, that some-one seemed to be putting a type of crampon on their trail shoe/trainer. Do you guys over there have crampons that fit trail shoes?

Yeah, one brand I’ve heard of that Nabor J used last year is Kahtoola.
He loved them.

Squatch,
thanks for that. I will have to investigate them, and see how easy it is to get a pair sent to the UK to try in our winter conditions (which sadly have come to an end now).

Once again a great podcast!
Squatch: The DVDs were amazing. Watched them with my wife who has done some video work in the past, and she was really impressed by the quality.
Weird Darren: The Kathoolas are great. They fit on pretty much anything, and the spikes are short enough that you can walk normally. Not really meant for anything technical (you can’t front point with them), but they are great as hiking crampons.
